A California Gull circles overhead. This type of gull is very common around Yellowknife. You are likely to also see Herring, Mew, Bonaparte, and maybe Ring Bill Gulls as well.
Grebes are very common around the houseboat and love to wake you up in the morning with their distinctive squawk.
A group of Common Loons glides across the bay.
Ptarmigan are a common sight around Yellowknife during the winter. They are the only bird in the world with fur on their feet and can be seen perched in the willow and birch trees around town.
In the fall the islands near Yellowknife are carpeted with tasty lowbush cranberries.
Ferns grow out of the moss and in the background rock tripe (black) and jewel lichen (orange) cover the rocks.
The breeze moves the shore grass on a windy fall day.
Hardy juniper berries grow in the harshest environments. The fruit takes two years to mature - the first year the berries are white and the second year they turn a rich blue colour.
Wild Roses bloom in early June before turning into rose hips. These are a common staple for Black Bears around Yellowknife and are an excellent source of viamin C.
Wild Chives add excellent flavour to cooking. Pick them before the flowers open for the best flavour.
